The Full Story
When I was a young kid, I always told my parents I wanted to be a lawyer. I had the gift of the gab and could hold my own during any argument, so pretty much everyone who knew me agreed this would be a good career path. I even started planning out my courses in university.
However, my part time job while in high school and university was working at The Mayfair Goalie Crease. Here I sold goalie equipment, made fitness plans, and did private goalie lessons on the mini ice surface we had at the store. I worked with kids and teenagers who wanted to get better at the position. Our team at Mayfair served Saskatoon and area goalies for close to a decade. I even shot pucks at some guys playing pro hockey in their off season… not going to say I taught them anything but I helped them work up a sweat! It was during this time realized I had a passion for teaching.
I threw my lawyer plans out the window and applied for education, and became a high school history and French teacher.
15 years later, a few teaching jobs and career changes to vice principal then principal, I am so glad I chose education. It has given me the family life I’ve always wanted. My wife who is also a vice principal and I have three kids and we savour the moments we get with them bc our schedule allows.
I coach on all my kids hockey teams, and you guessed it, they all love and play the same position as me: goalie.
I had a bit of a heart pang when my “boss” but mainly my friend, Benji sold The Mayfair Goalie Crease back in 2011. That place was my second home, and part of me always saw myself returning to sports equipment and instruction. I wasn’t in the position to purchase the business at that time and am still sad when I think about the amazing opportunity it could have been.
My wife asked me a while ago what I would do if I won the lottery and could quit my job, but wanted to stay working. My mind went immediately to working in sports retail and instructing goalies.
While “The Crease” Goalie Development isn’t quite that, it’s become its own unique opportunity for me to get back into the world of hockey and goaltending in a way that I never imagined.
